Understanding the Different Types of U-Joints

U-Joints, or universal joints, come in a range of varieties. While some are incredibly intricate, others are more straightforward. The simplest category is known as Cardan U-Joints, which are block-and-pin or bearing-and-cross types.

U-joints can have two styles of hubs: solid and bored. Solid hubs lack a machined hole, while bored hubs have a hole and are identified by the hole shape. These can be round, hexagonal, or square. Two unique bored designs include splined hubs, which have longitudinal grooves within the bore; and keyed hubs, which have keyways to prevent rotation of the U-joint on the matching shaft.

The Importance of Correct Lubrication

For the maintenance of U-joints, the type of lubrication used is crucial. Using the incorrect lubrication can lead to burned trunnions. Unless otherwise recommended, a high-quality E.P. (severe pressure) grease is suitable for servicing most vehicular, industrial, and auxiliary drive shaft applications.

Always ensure fresh grease is visible from all four U-joint seals. Improper lubrication procedures, such as not purging as recommended, can result in one or more bearings being starved for grease.

The Function and Applications of U-Joints

Mechanically flexible U-Joints are designed to accommodate end movement by using a telescoping shaft (square shafting or splines). These joints operate via a sliding movement between two flanges that are fork-shaped (a yoke) and have a hole (eye) radially through the eye linked by a cross.

These devices allow larger angles than flexible couplings and are utilized in scenarios where significant misalignment needs to be accommodated (1 to 30 degrees).

Some common issues with U-joints can be attributed to operational angles that are too large or a bent or sprung yoke. Overloading a drive shaft can cause yoke ears to bend, which can prevent the bearings from rolling in the bearing cap if the yoke ears are not aligned. If the bearings stop rolling, they remain stationary and can “beat themselves” into the surface of the cross.

A “frozen” slip assembly that doesn’t allow the drive shaft to extend or shorten can also lead to problems. Every time the drive shaft attempts to shorten, the tension is transmitted into the bearings, marking the cross trunnion. Brinnell marks caused by a frozen slip are always evident on the front and back surfaces of the cross trunnion.

Improper torque on U-bolt nuts can also result in brinelling. Most manufacturers publish the recommended torque for a U-bolt nut.
